The GentleWave procedure
GentleWave is a newer way to clean the inside of a tooth during root canal treatment. It uses fluid and broad-spectrum sound waves to reach the small branches of the canal system that files alone can miss.
Why cleaning matters
Root canals are not simple tubes. Most teeth have curves, fins and tiny side branches where bacteria can hide. A traditional root canal cleans with small files and rinses. The more of the system that gets cleaned, the lower the chance of infection coming back.
How GentleWave works
After the tooth is numbed and opened, a small handpiece rests on top of the tooth. It circulates treatment fluids through the canal system while delivering sound waves across a wide range of frequencies. The fluid reaches into spaces that instruments cannot, cleaning and disinfecting the tooth from the inside. The canals are then filled and sealed as usual.
What patients notice
- Often one visit instead of two.
- Less of the natural tooth needs to be removed to reach the canals.
- The same local anesthetic and the same aftercare as a traditional root canal.

Questions patients ask
Is GentleWave right for every tooth?
Not every tooth. Dr. El-Refai looks at your tooth, your images and your history, and recommends GentleWave when it is a good fit. If a standard root canal is the better choice, she will say so.
Does it take longer?
For many teeth, GentleWave allows cleaning and filling in one visit, which can mean fewer appointments overall.
Does insurance cover GentleWave?
Coverage depends on your plan. We will check your benefits and tell you what to expect before treatment.
