Regenerative endodontics
Sometimes a damaged pulp can be kept alive instead of removed. For young patients whose roots are still growing, that can let the tooth keep developing normally.
Vital pulp therapy
When the pulp is damaged but still alive, and the damage is not too deep, Dr. El-Refai may be able to protect it rather than remove it. She places a bioactive material such as MTA over the healthy pulp to encourage healing and seals the tooth. A good blood supply and healthy surrounding tissue make success more likely.
Regenerative procedures
In an immature tooth whose pulp has died, a regenerative procedure disinfects the canal and encourages new tissue to grow into it. The goal is for the root to keep thickening and lengthening, which a standard root canal filling cannot do.
What to expect
These treatments need follow-up visits over months to confirm the tooth is healing and the root is developing. We keep your general dentist informed at each step.

Who is a candidate?
Most often children and teens with an injured or decayed tooth whose root has not finished forming. Some adults with limited damage to the pulp are candidates for vital pulp therapy.
